Do I need a website, or is Instagram enough?

Somebody - an uncle, a client, a well-meaning friend with opinions about marketing - has told you that you need a website. Meanwhile your Instagram brings in real clients every week, and paying someone four figures for five pages about "our philosophy" feels absurd. You are both right. The useful question is not website-or-Instagram; it is which jobs each one can actually do.

What Instagram genuinely does well

For visual work - hair, nails, brows, beards - Instagram is the best portfolio ever invented. It shows your latest work, in your style, with social proof attached, to people who follow you because they already like it. It humanizes the shop before anyone walks in. Nothing on any website will ever beat a reel of a fade in progress. Keep posting; that part of the machine works.

Where Instagram alone leaks bookings

The leaks are structural, not your fault. Instagram is invisible to the person searching "barber near me" on Google - the highest-intent client that exists. It cannot show live availability, so every booking costs a DM conversation you have to notice and answer before they cool off. And the account itself is rented ground: the algorithm decides who sees you, and a lockout or hack takes your entire client channel with it overnight.

What a "website" actually needs to do

Strip away the mystique and a small service business needs a website for exactly four jobs: show up when locals search your name or trade, list your services with real prices, show when you are open, and let people book without talking to you. That is it. No slider, no stock photos of laughing strangers, no "our story" essay. Notice that none of these four jobs requires a traditional multi-page website - they require one good page.

The middle path: a booking page

A booking page is that one good page: your services and prices, your team, your hours, live availability, and a book button - on a link you own that Google can find and index. Put that link in your Instagram bio and the two tools snap together into a funnel: Instagram creates the desire, the page captures it while you sleep, no DM required. For most salons and barbershops this combination simply is the website, at a monthly cost of zero.

If you already have a website

A site you already own and like is worth keeping - it just should not dead-end at a contact form. Embed booking directly into it, so the visitor who is ready to commit can do so on the spot instead of writing an email into the void. A website that cannot take a booking in 2026 is a brochure; the embed is what upgrades it back into a shop.

Common questions

Is a booking page enough to show up on Google?
Paired with a Google Business Profile, yes - for the searches that matter to a local shop: your name, your trade, your area. Link the page from your profile so searchers can go from finding you to booking you in two taps. A ten-page website adds little to that for a single-location salon.
Do I need to buy a domain name?
Not to start taking bookings - your booking page comes with its own link that works everywhere today. A domain of your own becomes worth the few euros when you want print materials and a name clients can type from memory; you can point it at your page later without rebuilding anything.
Can I keep taking bookings through DMs too?
Of course - some regulars will always message you, and that is a feature of a small shop, not a bug. The difference is that DM bookings become your choice rather than your only channel: add them to the calendar yourself, and let everyone else self-serve from the link.
